Claudio Coviello arriva da Potenza, capoluogo di una regione ancora poco conosciuta ed apprezzata, la Basilicata. Oggi, a soli 22 anni, è Primo Ballerino di uno dei teatri più antichi e prestigiosi al mondo: La Scala di Milano. Prima di lui, a calcare le stesse scene, grandi nomi del balletto e dell’opera, personalità di spicco che si sono impegnate a promuovere l’Arte, con la A maiuscola. Questa è la storia di uno dei talenti più brillanti in Italia, di un giovane con passione e dedizione, una storia che ha il sapore dolce di una favola dove non è stata ancora scritta la parola fine. “Sicuramente è un grande onore poter ballare su uno dei più prestigiosi palcoscenici al mondo in cui si sono esibiti i più grandi artisti, e per un ragazzo di 22 anni penso sia una delle maggiori aspirazioni” ci scrive Claudio non appena finite le recite di Romeo e Giulietta, balletto al quale, casualmente, abbiamo assistito anche noi, rimanendo assolutamente estasiati della tecnica e dell’interpretazione di questo ballerino.
Il 4 maggio 2013 Claudio viene nominato Primo Ballerino del Teatro alla Scala, dopo una recita di Giselle: “Quella della nomina a Primo Ballerino è stata una delle giornate più belle della mia vita, che porterò per sempre nel cuore. L’emozione è stata davvero indescrivibile anche perché non me l’aspettavo a distanza di pochi mesi dalla promozione a solista. Certo sapevo che il maestro Vaziev stava puntando molto su di me”. Per punzecchiarlo un po’ gli domandiamo se le sue siano solamente bravura e dedizione fuori dal normale o se, per caso, ci sia in mezzo anche un piccolo pizzico di fortuna: “Sicuramente oltre al tanto lavoro e ai sacrifici nella vita ci vuole sempre un pizzico di fortuna. Indubbiamente mi ritengo fortunato ma nonostante questo cerco sempre di migliorare e lavorare per raggiungere nuovi risultati“.
Impossibile, parlando di Claudio, non tirare in ballo colui che nel panorama internazionale della danza brilla come una vera e propria etoile: Roberto Bolle. Entrambi italiani, entrambi ballerini del Teatro alla Scala, due talenti dotati di doti fisiche ed interpretative. Che tutto ciò di Bolle sia risaputo non è assolutamente in dubbio. Certo se è proprio lui a dire che Claudio “è il talento più evidente che ho visto, una gemma pura da coltivare” allora forse ci si può credere! “Quelle di Bolle sono parole che mi hanno emozionato e riempito di soddisfazione – racconta Claudio – ma non per questo mi sento il suo erede, assolutamente, sarebbe troppo presuntuoso paragonarsi o pensare di essere l’erede di un così grande ballerino”.
Il suo repertorio vanta già una serie di ruoli importanti, come Albrecht proprio in Giselle, Quasimodo nel Gobbo di Notre Dame, le jeune homme nell’omonima coreografia di Petit, Romeo, Siegfried, Basilio. Nemmeno a farlo apposta, e devo dire forse con una certa presunzione che me n’ero accorta, quello più vicino al suo modo di essere è Romeo: “Romeo è stato da sempre il ruolo dei miei sogni, e i ruoli che amavo e che da piccolo speravo un giorno di poter rappresentare, li ho già ballati! Certo non vedo l’ora di poterli interpretare nuovamente, magari con una maturità e una consapevolezza diversa. Mi piacerebbe anche cimentarmi in qualcosa di contemporaneo, non vorrei focalizzarmi solo sul classico. Ho già avuto l’occasione di ballare al Teatro Bolshoi, uno dei teatri più importanti al mondo, in occasione del tour a Mosca del Corpo di Ballo della Scala e anche in occasione del gala per i candidati al Premio Benois. Un giorno mi piacerebbe potermi esibire sul palcoscenico della Royal Opera House di Londra e dell’Opéra de Paris“.
Siamo partiti dalla fine a parlare di Claudio, dal successo, dagli applausi, dai grandi teatri. Eppure, per un bambino di 10 anni, il percorso non è stato affatto semplice: “Sono arrivato a Roma a 10 anni, ho avuto la possibilità di coltivare la mia passione alla scuola del Teatro dell’Opera grazie ai miei nonni che si sono trasferiti con me, dal momento che i miei genitori, per motivi di lavoro, non potevano accompagnarmi. Il percorso, come ogni percorso scolastico, è stato duro e delle volte anche molto difficile. Ho dovuto rinunciare ad alcune cose e sacrificare la mia vita da adolescente, ma di ciò sono stato sempre consapevole perché non appena sono arrivato a Roma ho capito che questo era quello che volevo fare nella mia vita. A scuola ho imparato tanto: oltre la tecnica mi sono state insegnate la disciplina e l’educazione, che sono fondamentali nel nostro lavoro. Rifarei tutto altre mille volte perché quando ci sono la passione e la determinazione non si sente il peso del sacrificio“.
Il piccolo Claudio è cresciuto, ma magari lì in Basilicata c’è un bimbo che lo segue da lontano e che vuole diventare come lui: “Ad un bambino appassionato consiglierei di non scoraggiarsi nei momenti più difficili, perché proprio in quei momenti bisogna stringere i denti e andare avanti, sono gli ostacoli che fanno crescere e migliorare. Oggi posso dire di essere felice di aver investito su me stesso perché ho raggiunto degli obbiettivi che mai avrei creduto di conquistare”.
La nuova stagione del Teatro alla Scala si sta per aprire: perché non fare un salto a veder danzare questo talento?

Claudio Coviello comes from Potenza, the county town of Basilicata, a region still not well known and appreciated. Today, at the age of 22, he is Primo Ballerino of one of the oldest and most prestigious theatres in the world: La Scala in Milan. Before him, big names of the ballet and opera with strong personalities were on the stage and they are committed to promoting the Arts. This is the story of one of the brightest talents in Italy, a young man with passion and dedication, a story that has the sweet flavor of a fable and where the last word has not yet been written. “It’s definitely a great honor to dance on one of the most prestigious stages in the world in which the greatest artists have performed, and for a 22 year old guy I think is one of the major aspirations” Claudio wrote to me as soon as the performances of Romeo and Juliet are ended. Casually I also have seen the ballet and I was absolutely enraptured from the technique and interpretation of this dancer.
On May 4, 2013 Claudio has been named Primo Ballerino at La Scala, after a performance of Giselle: “The fact that I have been named as Primo Ballerino was one of the the most beautiful days of my life, that will remain forever in heart. The emotion was indescribable because I did not expect after a few months from the promotion to soloist. Of course I knew that the teacher Vaziev was aiming a lot on me.” To tease him a little bit I ask him if his skill and dedication are just out of the ordinary or if, by chance, there is also, in the middle, a bit of luck. “Of course, in addition to the hard work and to the sacrifices, all of us need a bit of luck in life. Certainly I feel lucky but despite this I always try to improve and work on me to achieve new results.”
Impossible, talking about Claudio, not to trot out the one who, in the international ballet panorama, shines like a real etoile: Roberto Bolle. Both Italians, both dancers at La Scala, two talents equipped with physical and interpretation skills, and it is right Bolle to tell that Claudio “is the most obvious talent that he has ever seen, a pure gem to grow” then maybe we can believe it!. “the words of Bolle are the ones that moved and filled me with satisfaction -says Claudio- but that don’t make me his heir, absolutely not, it would be too presumptuous to think about being his heir of such a great dancer.”
His repertoire has already a number of important roles such as Albrecht in Giselle, Quasimodo in the Hunchback of Notre Dame, le jeune homme in the homonymous choreography by Petit, Romeo, Siegfried and Basilio. Just by coincidence and with a little bit of presumption I have noticed that the closest to his way of being is Romeo. “Romeo has always been the role of my dreams, and the roles that I loved when I was small and I hoped one day to be able to represent, I have already danced them! of course I cannot wait to play them again, maybe with a maturity and a different awareness. I would also like to experience something contemporary, I do not want to focus only on the classic ballet. I have already had the opportunity to dance at the Bolshoi Theatre, one of the most important theaters in the world, during the tour of the Scala’s corps de ballet in Moscow and also at the gala for the candidates for the Prix Benois de la Danse. One day I wish I could show on the stage of the Royal Opera House in London and the Paris Opera.”
We started from the end to talk about Claudio, from the the success, the applause, the great theaters, and yet, for a 10 years old child, tha path has not been easy at all. “I arrived in Rome when I was 10 years old and I have had the opportunity to foster my passion at the Opera House Theatre’s school thanks to my grandparents who have moved with me, since my parents, for business reason, could not accompany me. The path, like every school curriculum, was hard and sometimes very difficult. I had to give up some things and sacrifice my teenager’s life, but I always was aware of this because as soon as I arrived in Rome I realized that this was what I wanted to do in my life. In school I learned so much: besides the technique I was taught discipline and education, which are essential in our work. I would do it all a thousand times because when you have the passion and determination you will not feel the weight of the sacrifice.”
The small Claudio grew up, but maybe in Basilicata there is a child who follows him from afar and wants to be like him. “For a child who loves ballet I would reccomend to not lose heart in the most difficult moments, because in those moments you have to bite the teeth and move on, there are the obstacles that make you grow and improve. Today I can say that I’m glad to have invested in myself because I have achieved goals that I never thought of winning.”
