Even the most inattentive and hurried pedestrian walking down Via del Gazometro, without even stopping whatever he’s doing, can admire the three large bright windows that introduce the delightful world of Mercat.

Located in the lively and eccentric Ostiense district, just two steps from the River Port and the new ice cream parlour La Romana, the refined local of Cinzia seems to stand out from all others because it’s unique, with its intimate atmosphere and a little vintage, so that the young owner does not seem to be afraid at all of the fierce competition of the other adjacent shops. Indeed, she explains that the redevelopment of the area and the subsequent explosion of new trendy bars, restaurants, pubs and clubs, does make the neighborhood more attractive in the eyes of citizens, especially the younger ones, and sets in motion a profitable vicious circle which can attract more new customers intrigued by the culinary and cultural former industrial district.

Ostiense district, in short, never ceases to amaze: it is a source of great ideas, interesting and innovative projects, a constantly changing the face of the city, also literally speaking. Just think of the various works of street art that are popping up like mushrooms on the old buildings in the neighborhood, giving a bit of color and cheer of abandoned or dilapidated structures.

In this extremely creative frame, fits Cinzia Marinello’s pretty bistrot, a real piece of heaven on Earth. The restaurant is open 7 days a week, from 5 pm to 2 am and takes its name from the former Mercati Generali (farmers’ markets), which are located nearby.

Jazz-swing music, 20s background, decorated in true English style, pretty Edison’s bulbs hanging from the walls, Chester sofas and a wide selection of drinks and foods in season, groomed and selected by the owner in person: this and much more still is the Mercat Bistrot & Old Bar.

Cinzia is within the beverage industry for 8 years; she worked for Lanificio 159, La Bibliotechina, Akab and Rialto: as she confessed to me, she has always been fascinated by the world of the night, but not only. At evening shifts, in fact, she committed by alternating shifts for brands like H&M and Zara during the day. Finally, Cinzia decided to open a place of her own, seeing always positive results and possessing an undeniable talent as a barman. The choice fell on this small place, ex headquarters of INAIL bureaus, vacant for 5 years, which had struck her for one thing in particular: the brightness. The most value was made of the latter feature with the creation of the three huge windows, all open and therefore able to make the local open space during the summer season. Directly facing the street, created with the public and the environment surrounding a relationship of complicity and integration of strong impact.

So Cinzia, alone and at the age of 29, thanks to her infectious energy and a tremendous force of will, has achieved her goal to open the place of her dreams. It was on November 25th, 2013, just over one year ago. From that day on, she tells me proudly, the rewards are forever increasing and sacrifices were largely repaid.

Mercat’s culinary offer is varied and changes according to the season and creativity of Cinzia. The products, in fact, are always fresh because they are bought and consumed daily, while the menu is ever changing. They range from simple pies and “booties” (Italian “ciriole” emptied and filled with Amatriciana sauce, “cacciatore” chicken or with vignarola) to ginger and pumpkin soups, lasagna with juniper, and quiche Lorraine with bacon, Swiss cheese and eggs. Not to mention the desserts! The highlight is the warm popcorn covered with vanilla ice cream, on which is poured maple syrup, and covered with nuts, all served in a glass jar. To all this must be added a meticulous attention to detail: crystal glasses, serving porcelain dishes, candle holders sought. Each object seems to have a unique story to tell.

Even for the drinks the offer is full and varied: wines and craft beers (even beer for celiac people is coming soon), herbal teas (a particular one ginger and lemon flavor and the one with the popcorn inside), centrifuges, a wide selection of cocktails and finally water at zero km and filtered.

Looking at all that Cinzia has achieved within a year, and that she is enjoying a well-deserved success, I just have to ask her what it feels like to recommend to those who want to embark on her own way, she managed to bet on herself and on her dreams and arrived already so far. These are her words with which I want to leave you:

“You must try to project yourself into the future with the mind that you imagine for yourself. You have to believe in it with all your strengths and you have to fight until the last, despite the enormous difficulties. You have to go on your way, never losing the sight of the goal. The fear is there, but the important thing is to never give up; you must always be ready to change, to adapt. And remember; quality and friendliness always pay off”.
