David Stenbeck feeds on art and gives us back visions that leave their signature in the unconscious, we are attracted by them. Brilliant and psychological. He works with fluorescence, with the body, in a careful analysis linked to the European historical culture, fundamental cornerstone. In his visual explosions we intercept his journey, from Caravaggio to Pasolini through his Swedish landscapes.

The meeting with David was dictated by chance, just during the day when we printed one of his works and we exposed it in our Relax Room in Rome. A hand that reaches out to a luminous, unreal circumference. An ideal sun, an ambition built to invite people to travel with thought. And we, in our Relax Room, travel, think of David and we always travel.

Who is David Stenbeck, what is his cultural background and his artistic career?

I’m originally a poet and literary critic, and have spent many years as editor-in-chief of various digital magazines with creative content. The main goal has been to help young and aspiriing writers and poets of the Scandinavian languages to establish themselves on the sometimes very cynic anglosaxian media sphere. I’m a Swedish citizen, living in the smallish coast town of Helsingborg. As for any cultural background, I believe I could call myself post-pasolinian. More so when it comes to contemporary critical theory of society and art, to his linguistics and poetics, and certainly less when it comes to explicit and actual politics since I believe one things is universal and the other isn’t.

How would you define your visual research, what is the essential aspect of your work?

I’m an art consumer, really. Perhaps not financially, but I have build my life upon our mutual history of art, (non si capisce il senso della frase, mutual a cosa si riferisca) continuing a very important aesthetical tradition. However, that is a tradition that need to be revised thoroughly, re-analyzed and perhaps even rebranded. Here, we have no museal responsabilities what so ever, rather we do our predecessors the favour of attempting to understand the artistic ideals of “all time”, in our time. To me, understanding classical music, literature and graphic art let’s me work with my own art more effortlessly.

Lights, neon, talc, holograms. Yours is a well-defined aesthetic. How did you choose this language and what communication power did you experience using it in this age of Millennials?
Luci, neon, talco, ologrammi.

Obviously, american girls and women takes a liking to pink neon, or at least my Insagram statistics tells me that, as they are in majority. In one aspect, the neon-non-neon scheme is a modern variation of Caravaggio’s chiaroscuro, but it’s also strong as signal color, focal point and factor of disturbation of the image composition itself. Having the traditional European art in my back, I’m looking forward to something new, and perhaps better. Art and science out of a non patriarch structurre, to philosophical questions of what art has to become and mean to humanity in the future. I usually talk about the status of the monument in a post fallian school, like can we create something out of grace without it looking like a dick? Or, if we let it look like a dick, could it have any other inherrent value? I seriously believe that, and here comes my sci-fi approach, if we could find a new planet, free from all the dysfunctional shit modern civilisation has to offer, like unsane, anti-social, ugly city housing, greedy banking and uncool coorporations, would it be possible to try to establish some kind of a worthy, science based, atheist humanist society? Or, how loing would it take before the new world starts to look like the old? At least we have to challenge ourselves with those kinds of thought experiments, to understand that reality as we know it is man made, and that it doesn’t have to be this way. All the pointing hands, glowing lights, disrupting matter and raving rainbows in my art has this in mind, and references to this here discussion. Love humanity, and set humanity free.

How important is the character of the colours you use? Do your works have a precise emotion?

I use colors as language really, playing on the associative emotions of the masses raised within pop culture environments. Everybody seem to have some distant memory of learning what sunlight is, how we can create light and shadow, the movement of our hands up against the summer sky, the early touch of skin between young lovers, the first kiss, time of loss, loneliness, our reflection in the mirror, the creation of the self, all those kinds of things could be played and replayed with colors, familiar emblematics, like certain body movements, or the certain glow of late afternoon sun in between the moments where the world has our attention and where we truly can become ourselves, if only just for a brief moment.

What is the relationship with the human body in your search, and in particular with the female body?

I believe it’s easier to work with the female body as it is canonized, perhaps wrongfully, within the pop colture. Whenever I try to work with male bodies, there’s hesitation and misjudgment, especially in a heteronorm dungeon as Instagram, where the male nude seem to equal, or translate into, the gay nude. Obviously, there can be no discrimination between the beauty of the two, or the love of the two, or the sexuality of the two. Everything has to do with motif and composition, and artistic quality of course, but there are shorter tracks to chose and there are longer, and in this case I’m usually a conformist. Unhappily so, I should add.
Purtroppo, dovrei aggiungere.

What would you suggest to those like you who want to dedicate their life to a creative career?
Cosa suggeriresti a chi come te desidera dedicare la propria vita alla carriera creativa?

Don’t just be different, be very different. In this journey towards the new, try to gain an objective understanding of quality to meassure where you are at, and move from there. Don’t expect anyone to be greatful for what you create, they won’t be until you are among the best. And for the beginners: Copy the masters until you master them – then diverge.
